The Dutch House is a listed building believed to be York’s oldest brick built house dating from 1648. Featured on many of the historical walks around York, it is one of York’s finest historical private residences.
Situated in the street of Ogleforth to the rear of York Minster and adjacent to Chapter House Street, the property was saved from decay and has been sympathetically renovated, providing the perfect balance between comfort and history. The property is now back to its former glory and will be there to be enjoyed by the numerous visitors for generations to come.
The accommodation is spread over 3 floors and furnished to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of the guests. With underfloor heating throughout, this is a luxurious two double-bedroom house. Both bedrooms have individual ensuite facilities, one with its own free-standing double ended bath.
On the ground floor the open plan living area consists of a fully equipped handmade kitchen with everything that you will need for your break in York. The open plan lounge offers a wonderful space to get together to discuss the day ahead, or an evening relaxing in your own special piece of York history. There is also a dining table, which comfortably sits four for an evening meal or the perfect holiday breakfast!
With so many of the famous historic landmarks of York literally on your doorstep, you won’t be short of things to do and see. You also have theatres, restaurants, designer shopping and York’s great Railway Museum along with other places of interest.
If you are bringing your car, the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Dales, and Harrogate are all within easy driving distance. With private secure parking also offered with the property you are perfectly set in this beautiful piece of York history.
Please note, there is a minimum age of 8 years old for children staying at this property.
Christmas shopping
We stay in York for a week every December to do our Christmas shopping. Our two main priorities for somewhere to stay are central location and parking. The Dutch House was the perfect location with the added bonus of onsite secure parking - fabulous! The house was quirky, warm, very clean, and comfortable. Another bonus was that it was only round the corner from our favourite restaurant in York - Little Italy- not to be missed for authentic dishes (no pizzas!). It was a pity that there was no welcome pack, as shown on the pictures, and even mentioned in the visitors book, Some milk would have been nice to make a drink when we arrived, but not too far from shops to pop out. Minor point. Clear Instructions on how to open/manipulate the door are needed - not a problem when you know what to do (we ended up having to phone the office), awkward in the rain! All in all a wonderful stay.
Beautiful historic home
The Dutch House is a beautiful historic home in the center of York, close to the Minster, but far enough to be quiet. It's a lovingly restored property on three stories, and very comfortable. Great kitchen for cooking with everything you'd need. The double bath in the second floor bedroom was a wonderful bonus! As an historic property, it's the focus of tour groups which show up 4-5 times a day. It was amusing at first, but after a few days it was tiresome, especially when people would peer in the window. There are a few drawbacks: the beds are not particularly comfortable. For the price point, I would expect a better mattress. Being a very old building it has some condition issues in the plaster work, uneven floors, stair pitch, etc. Finally, there is a smart heating system which was set to 11° celsius (52° fahrenheit). I could set the thermostat to a comfortable temp, but after 2 hours it would reset to 11°. Being eco-friendly is one thing, but this struck me as downright parsimonious.

It’s very rare that a Holiday Home truly feels like a home and without exception The Dutch House delivers on every level. You can tell that a great deal of love was involved with the restoration of the property, and the Hosts are deservedly very proud of the results. This is truly an exceptional place to stay, very close to all the local attractions with off street parking making a great city break. Everything you need is included for your stay, the beds and furnishings are all fresh and of the highest standard, we will be staying again without question.
