THE BOOKCLUB
This property has been sympathetically renovated to retain the character and history of the original well-loved book shop, The Bookclub is a unique place to stay in the heart of the City. The original book shop, Stone Trough Books, was run by the late bookseller and publisher George Ramsden for over 30 years. A true character who made the headlines back in 2006 when his collection of books by American author Edith Wharton was sold (reportedly worth millions). The bookshop was also featured in the star-studded film 'Mad to be Normal' back in 2016 where scenes were shot inside. The film starred former Doctor Who actor David Tennant as well as Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaids Tale), Sir Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne.
Every thought has been given to the comfort and enjoyment of the guests. Sharon McDonagh, the interior designer on this project, has given a great deal of thought to everything that has gone into the property. Sharon already has her own property with Stays York - The Arthouse - so she has a great understanding of what makes a memorable City break or holiday in York. Both 5 Precentors Court and The Smithy, are also part of the same group of fantastic properties. Again providing a great understanding of what it takes to make your time in York as comfortable as possible.
As you walk into the property you step into a fabulous living area, with a seating area and smart TV, bookshelf (books provided of course!), artwork on the walls and quirky signs, you immediately feel like you have booked something special.
In the lower ground floor you are then treated to the perfect space to kick back, relax and listen to one of the many great albums provided on the vintage record player or play the retro video games console. Or even just to take in your favourite show on the smart TV. Whatever you decide to do with your time in this fantastic property, you know that you are there to relax and enjoy.
On the first floor is the master bedroom - Designed for comfort - complete with a kingsize bed, double ended bath and walk in shower - it provides a level of luxury equivalent to any high end hotel.
Back on the ground floor you have a fully equipped kitchen, including a Nespresso machine and breakfast bar - however as Walmgate is awash with fantastic place to eat and drink you may never need to use the kitchen!
The kitchen leads to the rear of the property which has a table and chairs, ideal for when you wish to dine "al fresco" . Looking over you will see a signpost to "The Naughty Corner" follow this and you will discover yet another cosy out door area - perfect for enjoying morning coffee or pre dinner drinks in your own private space.
THE BOOK CLUB is something very special - just for 2. Outdoor Space, Central Location and Private Parking. The Perfect Treat for when you visit York - unlike any other English city. With thirty world-class museums to explore, the best racecourse in the country and a thriving cultural scene - not forgetting, York is voted the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times, you have the perfect combination.
Please note that the parking space for the property is in a private garage. If you have a larger car it may not fit. The dimensions of the garage are as below:
1.97 Meters Height
2.15 Meters Width

Amazing find for a short break
12 November 2024
The Boookclub is a great find. Conveniently located, it has been cleverly designed to creat an amazing, very effective and very comfortable place to stay. A very pleasant contrast to hotels. The heating worked well. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom spacious and the shower powerful. The kitchen was clean and very functional. Two reception areas were great, and the vinyl collection downstairs was a winner. Being able to extend outside to the naughty corner was a great addition. The bookclub is a great find and well located. Plenty of places to eat nearby and the secure garage less than two minutes walk away was perfect in the town centre. A great place for couples. One thing to note - wax ear plugs are a must. The bedroom is at the front of the building, and overnight the road can be very noisy both with students or vehicles. We stayed two nights, and the second night was bliss!!! Dont let this put you off, just some advice. The Bookclub is really worth considering. We will definitely come and stay again.
Anniversary Weekend

We have stayed in York many times but always in a hotel. This time around we came across the Bookclub and took the plunge to try something different. What an amazing place, the extra space and facilities were perfect for us. Perfectly located as only 5 minute walk into the Shambles but lots of restaurants, cafes etc right on the doorstep. We will hopefully stay again on our next visit. I should also add that the garage parking was very well located near the house. For those with a larger car we fitted a Volvo V90 in the garage albeit it was a tight fit!
Bookclub stay
10 September 2023
Lovely place to stay, clean and tidy, incredibly convenient location (lots of great places to est nearby) and really handy to have somewhere to park. The Snug was especially great in the hot weather as a cool place to escape and chill out! Two points for improvement: - the location of the entrance to the garage area could have been made clearer, pictures are provided but it isn't clear where on Walmsgate it is. Reference points such as the shops either side would have been useful. - as much as the open plan bedroom/bathroom is nice, as that includes the toilet a sliding frosted screen would be nice for some privacy. There were also some workmen in the back area on the morning we left, wouldn't have been an issue as they were outside except that all the windows were open due to the hot weather and they were using a ladder next door, so not great for privacy. An advanced warning would have been appreciated.
A fantastic find! Perfect base for exploring York

We loved The Bookclub for our 4 day trip to York. Beautifully furnished with everything you need, and in an ideal location for exploring the delights of York. We were max. 15 mins walk from everything. The Snug was fantastic for retreating to for a movie. Well definitely look to book this again on future trips to York
