Getting out of the house and doing something fun and creative is relaxing as well as being a great bonding opportunity and a chance to explore a skill you didn’t even know you had. York has a fantastic combination of creative, relaxing and more physical activities all year round, and we have discovered several extra special events on Mother’s Day.

Flower arranging
Create your own special flower arrangements within the 14th century secluded Bedern Hall a beautifully restored church in the heart of the city centre. For £40 per person this class lasts two  hours from 2pm-4pm on Sunday 22nd March. This includes tips and inspiration, a wide choice of containers to display your flowers in and afternoon tea with a glass of bubbles at the end! Head over to their website and book here.

If you’re fancying doing something a bit different, Botanic York (the home to unique and exotic house plants) are putting on their first Terrarium workshop on the 20th March time perfect if you’re celebrating Mother’s Day a couple of days early!

Cooking class at the Grand
Make your Mother’s Day Grand with a visit to The Grand Cookery School. Across the weekend, the school has a combination of full and half day classes including an Italian night, a Vegetarian dinner party, and a chocolate classic afternoon course for all you Chocoholics out there. From £85 per person, you can enjoy your creations and a glass of wine or a cup of tea!

And relax with a Spa Day
Why not treat you and your mum to a relaxing day at a spa. Here are some of our favourites…

Middlethorpe Hall
Middlethorpe Hall is in a beautiful Georgian house  a few miles from York, the house is a 10-minute drive south of York, and can also be accessed by bus, we think it’s definitely worth a visit.  The Spa itself is set within two listed Edwardian cottages together with its own enclosed garden. The Grand Hotel – Spa
The Grand is a 5-star tranquil escape in the heart of York. Within walking distance of all of our properties, the Spa is an ideal place to relax within the City Walls. Mother’s Day brings a variety of day spa packages including full use of the facilities. Continue the blissful escape and treat your mum to afternoon Tea in the White Rose Lounge with a refreshing glass of Prosecco. and that’s not all,  your mum will be treated to a luxurious Molton Brown gift!! Afternoon Tea prices start from £32 per person on the 22nd March.

Enjoy the beauty of York with some time exploring and shopping
No city break would be complete without taking in the local sights and visiting landmarks.

York’s top sightseeing spots include the York Minster, and if you’re feeling ambitious, you can climb up the Minster tower steps where you’ll be blown away by a fantastic view of York. Following on from this, the City Walls walk is excellent if you would like to see a lot of York in a few hours.

As part of your sightseeing tour, make sure to visit The Shambles - one of the most famous and oldest shopping streets in Europe. Here you will find ‘Little Shambles Jewellers’, an independent family run shop which sell unique pieces at reasonable prices -– why not let your mum pick out her favourite piece as a gift.

Another great street to visit is Fossgate, which is home to some of York’s most unique shops as well some great hidden gems. Take a wander down and pop into ‘Bowler Vintage’ clothing shop whilst you’re there. Bowler Vintage sell both original and replicated vintage clothes at some great prices, again, great for a unique Mother’s Day gift!

Low Petergate is home to some beautiful boutique clothing shops. Molly Browns is a British designer boutique clothing shop selling a variety of daywear, accessorises and ball dresses. This is a great girly shop to explore with your mum and of course to pick up a treat or two for mum. Across the road from here, you will find Mint Velvet - first opened in Windsor and now in our historic streets.

Take a stroll and get outside
As the weather is starting to get a little better heading into the Spring, a walk is the best way to brush off those winter cobwebs and refresh yourself!

Beningborough Hall
Around a 20-minute drive North of York is the wonderful Beningborough Hall. Here you can take a scenic stroll around the boundary. Step inside the Italian inspired 18th Century hall and discover the saloon galleries exhibiting the 2020 exhibition about the families and those who occupied the residence.

Or if you’d rather stay in the city, York’s River Ouse is great if you want a walk right on your doorstop. You can walk as little or as long as you would like. Similar to the York City Walls - great if you want some exercise and wanting to see some great views of ‘hidden York’.

Treat yourself to some delicious food and drink
As part of your day of exciting Mother’s Day activities, you shouldn’t miss York’s exciting food scene! From speciality menu’s, Sunday lunches and afternoon tea’s, York has a delicious selection of cafés and restaurants ready to explore.

Afternoon Tea at The Principal
Located very centrally, next to York’s railway station, The Principle hotel is providing a Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea for the great price of £22 per person. Set within the Garden Room,  you will be able to sit back and relax for the afternoon with views of the hotel gardens with the Minster in the distance.

Tapas and cava
Enjoy a free glass of cava for mum at Ambiente Tapas this Mother’s Day whilst enjoying a sit-down meal in one of the best Tapas restaurants in York. Set on Fossgate, Ambiente is great if you’re wanting something a bit different from a ‘chain’ restaurant and a great selection of mouth-watering sharing dishes.

Chocolate at Goddard’s House, the home of the Terry family
Spend your Mother’s Day within the home of the famous Terry’s Chocolate Family - the creators of the Terry’s Chocolate Orange, which is part of York’s renowned Chocolate heritage. Located a mile or so outside of York near the Racecourse, it is a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Explore the house and spend the afternoon here having a traditional afternoon tea in the family dining room on Sunday 22 March, from 10:30am-5:00pm.

Whilst you’re there, it is a great opportunity to take a tour of this 1920’s style family home, built by local architect Walter Brierley. You can also take a stroll around the beautiful 5-acre garden, with views of York Racecourse and Terry’s factory Clock Tower.

Check out our new property ‘The Brierley’, named after the architect, himself, situated within the Purey Cust York.

Sunday lunches in the heart of the city

Lamb and Lion Inn
You won’t find a more historical Sunday lunch than at the Lamb and Lion Inn, located a minutes’ walk from York Minster and just across from our office on High Petergate. Set next to Bootham Bar (one of the four ancient Roman gateways), you will be able to sit back and relax with their delicious Sunday dinner or choose from  classic English pub grub like battered haddock and homemade chips, to tasty vegetarian dishes such as “Sweet & Sour” Tempura Vegetables, crispy fried vegetables and sweet potato. If the sun makes an appearance, don’t forget to check out the best beer garden in York out the back!

The Whippet Inn
If you’re wanting a bit of ‘posh pub grub’ The Whippet Inn is a great suggestion. The pub itself is a restored Victorian Yorkshire pub with modern interior twists, focussing on the best of British food. The restaurant itself serves local Yorkshire meats with a seasonal veg and a delicious leek and bacon in cream and possibly the best crunchy roast potatoes!
