Are you thinking of somewhere new to visit this summer? Somewhere full of activities, rich in heritage and thriving with delicious food and drink? Here are five reasons why a holiday in York has something for everyone.
A Day at York Races
Whether you like getting dressed up in your suit, dress & heals, or relaxing in your casual attire with a picnic and beer, York Races welcomes you to do both these things. With an interest in horse racing or not, a day at the races is fun filled and great for a friends or family day out in York.
Visiting York Minster
The eye of the city has got to be The Minster, a beautiful gothic cathedral which can be seen from all across York. You can simply admire the views from below, or arrange for a free tour, where you will learn all about the significance and history of the Minster. The beautiful stain glass window called ‘The Sisters’ is a definite must see. You can also climb up the steep steps of the tower up to the top of the Minster, which on a clear day boast views across York and beyond.
Endless Food & Drink
York prides itself in having over 365 pubs – at least one for every day of the year! You could find yourself down a narrow, cobbled street, leading to a pub full of quirks and history like the ‘House of Trembling Madness’, or you could stumble upon the birthplace of Guy Fawkes, ‘The Guy Fawkes Inn’ which features a big art mural depicting the gun powder plot in their beer garden.
York History & Heritage
If you hadn’t already guessed, York is bursting with history. Everywhere you look there is history to be found. We are home to:
- The Jorvik Centre
- Castle Museum
- The National Railway Museum
- York Art Gallery
- Clifford’s Tower
- …and countless other hidden history gems.
The most notorious might well be The Shambles, a cobbled street hidden away behind the market stalls and is said to have been one of the influences which inspired J.K Rowling’s Diagon Alley.
Did you know…? The leaning buildings in The Shambles actually originate from the street being home to many butchers. The architectural design was introduced to block out the sun so that the meat lasted longer.
Getting Around The City
Transport links in York couldn’t be better. Everything in the city walls is within walking distance from each other, this is probably where you will find most of the things you want do during your stay in York. With very few hills, it is a pleasure to walk around the city; the main difficulty is trying to manage the cobbled streets wearing a pair of heels!
Depending on the weather, you can also cover the whole of the original city by walking the Bar Walls, a vast majority of which are still accessible and can be walked in a couple of hours. You could take up to a day exploring the walls, with regular stops at the four corners of York - Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar, Micklegate Bar and Bootham Bar.
